Oily skin can be the cause of real frustration, besides the slick oily complexion, oily skin often leads to acne breakouts.
How to tell if your skin is oily?
To most of clients oily skin is apparent but that doesn’t mean it’s always apparent. Here are a few things to look for:
3 Steps To Confirm:
If your skin feels comfortable not tight or dry but there is oil on the tissue you more than likely have oily skin.
Why is my skin oily and how can I treat it?
The causes for oily skin are tricky, it could be your genetics, hormonal or even improper skincare routine.
Hereditary - due to our genetics some of us are dispositioned to overproduce the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that is responsible for excess sebum production. Healthy skin needs sebum to provide a skin barrier but too much of a good thing can be a problem. Too much oil not only stretches out our pores, oil along with dirt and dead skin cells lead to acne breakouts.
Developing a consistent daily skincare routine along with professional natural skincare treatments from our medical aesthetician will be critical in managing oily skin and sub-sequential acne breakouts.
During your consult with our holistic medical aesthetician you can expect:
Climate - whether is hot summer days, sweaty workouts or long saunas, heat and humidify can lead to excessive oil production. Be sure to keep a clean damp cloth close by to wipe down the skin periodically to remove sweat and dirt from building up and be sure to use an oil based cleanser when done.
Hormones - unfortunately even after puberty hormones can run havoc on our skin. Your menstrual cycle plays a key role in how your skin looks and feels through out the month. You may have noticed that right before your period your skin becomes a little oily leading to a hormonal acne breakout, typically around your chin and jawline.
Ask about hormonal testing. DUTCH is an acronym for dried urine test for comprehensive hormones. This private test is a staple in our practice for assessing hormonal status in women and men. It encompasses a large portion of the working pieces to understanding how your hormone is being utilized in the body.
With this test and results our team of health professionals will develop a road map to balanced hormones and health skin.
Skincare - there are a number of mistakes we can make when it comes to caring for our oily skin. Those suffering with acne breakouts and oily skin tend to shy away from oil based products and moisturizer as little as possible.
