Treating Large Pores with Microdermabrasion + Glycolic Peel

Q + A with EASTND’s medical aesthetician, Karen UImanis

Do many clients have worries about large pores?

Almost every client I treat mentions their pores and about 1/3 of clients come specifically to treat them.

The truth is some of us just have larger pores than others but if you can easily see them in the mirror it probably means they are clogged which often leads to an acne breakout and often blackheads.

A caution on magnifying mirrors used at home to “check out” our skin. I don’t think these are necessary, they do not reflect what your skin really looks like, leading us to over use skin products and too much make up. A normal mirror in a well lite room is all you need.

Do pores actually get bigger?

Yes and no. We can’t actually change the size of our pores but they can stretch when clogged with oil and can appear smaller when they are clean.

As we age and our skin loses collagen and elastin our pores will stretch out.

Keeping them clean and clear of debris is the first step, the introduction of a quality collagen into our diet is the second and professional skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels and microneedling are very effective when treating our pores.

Are clogged pores acne?

Pores exist to release our skin’s natural oil, to moisturize it and protect it from the elements. When they are clogged deep in the skin due to dead skin cells and dirt it creates a dark shadow on the walls of the pore that results in what we refer to as “blackheads”. When the clog is on the surface of the skin these are referred to as “whiteheads”. Once the pores become inflamed you now have acne.

Do only people with oily skin have large pores?

No, even dry or dehydrated skin can have pores that appear larger. Loss of collagen will make our skin looser and pores less tight.

What do you recommend for at home treatment?

A simple skin care routine goes along way:

  1. Cleanse - AM + PM
  2. Toner - AM + PM to restore the skin’s PH levels
  3. Moisturize - AM + PM, many clients with oily skin want to skip this step but this is a must!
  4. Exfoliate - 2 x 3 per week. Removing dead skin cells is key to keeping your pores clear and clean.
  5. Dry Brush - every single morning not only clears away dead skin debris, it increases circulation in the skin and clears the lymphatic system.

And of course a SFP of at least 30. Sun damages our skin on even the dullest of days leading to the degradation of our skins natural collagen and elastin of our skin, resulting in looser skin and stretched our pores.

What natural skin treatments are offered at EASTND?

For those clients looking for little downtime and instant results I recommend microdermabrasion and glycolic peel treatment package.

We steam and thoroughly cleanse the skin, opening your pores as much as possible,

Followed by microdermabrasion to exfoliated the dead skin and clean out the pores in preparation for the deeper exfoliation next.

We then apply a glycolic solution to exfoliate and clean deeper into the pores. The peel is left on for 3-5 minutes depending on the skin type.

Once the glycolic solution is neutralized we apply a hydrating facial mask. It’s this hydration that ensures no peeling and less than 24 hour downtime.

Microneedling is another treatment that is very effective for treating clogged and enlarged pores with so many other benefits such as treating:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Collagen production
  • Over all tone and texture of the skin

Take this as an opportunity to have a professional natural skin rejuvenation treatment with our medical aesthetician at EASTND.
