Microneedling
A minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment using tiny needles to stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.
Microneedling is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that involves using a device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin's surface. These micro-injuries stimulate the body's natural collagen production and promote skin repair, resulting in improved texture, reduced fine lines, and a more youthful appearance. It is an effective treatment for various skin concerns, including acne scars, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.

How do I know it is right for me?
If you are looking to treat:
Mild to Moderate Wrinkles: Individuals with fine lines and wrinkles caused by aging or sun damage can benefit from microneedling as it stimulates collagen production, which helps improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
Acne Scarring: Microneedling is effective in treating acne scars, particularly shallow or depressed scars, by encouraging new collagen formation and promoting smoother skin texture.
Enlarged Pores: Those with enlarged pores can benefit from microneedling as the treatment helps to refine and minimize pore size, resulting in a smoother and more even complexion.
Uneven Skin Texture: Microneedling can improve the overall texture of the skin, making it a suitable option for individuals with rough or uneven skin.
Hyperpigmentation, including melasma: Microneedling can be beneficial for reducing the appearance of hyperpigmentation, including sunspots, age spots, and melasma, by promoting even skin tone.
Stretch Marks: Microneedling can help diminish the appearance of stretch marks by stimulating collagen and elastin production, leading to improved skin texture.
Skin Tightening: Microneedling promotes the production of collagen and elastin, leading to improved skin firmness and tighter skin, making it a valuable treatment for individuals seeking skin tightening and rejuvenation.
General Skin Rejuvenation: Individuals seeking overall skin rejuvenation and a refreshed appearance can consider microneedling to improve skin tone and texture.
Contraindications
Microneedling is generally a safe and well-tolerated cosmetic procedure. However, certain contraindications may make individuals unsuitable candidates for this treatment. It's crucial to discuss your medical history and skin condition with a licensed skincare professional or dermatologist before undergoing microneedling. Common contraindications for microneedling include:
1. Active Acne or Skin Infections: Microneedling can worsen active acne or skin infections and may lead to the spread of bacteria.
2. Eczema or Dermatitis: Individuals with eczema or dermatitis may experience increased skin sensitivity and irritation from microneedling.
3. Open Wounds or Cuts: Microneedling should not be performed on areas with open wounds or cuts as it may cause further injury or infection.
4. Keloid or Hypertrophic Scarring: Individuals with a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring should avoid microneedling, as it may trigger excessive scar tissue formation.
5. Blood Clotting Disorders or Anticoagulant Medication Use: Microneedling involves creating controlled micro-injuries on the skin, which may lead to bleeding for individuals with blood clotting disorders or those using anticoagulant medications.
6. Active Herpes Simplex (Cold Sores): Microneedling can trigger cold sore outbreaks in individuals with an active herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection.
7. Pregnancy: Pregnant individuals are advised to avoid microneedling as a precautionary measure.
8. Recent Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments: Microneedling should not be performed on recently treated areas with chemical peels or laser resurfacing, as the skin may be sensitive and prone to irritation.
9. Skin Cancer or Pre-cancerous Lesions: Microneedling is not recommended for individuals with a history of skin cancer or pre-cancerous lesions.
10. Immunosuppression or Immune Disorders: Individuals with compromised immune systems, immunosuppressive diseases, or those taking immunosuppressive medications should avoid microneedling due to the risk of infections and delayed healing.
10. Recent Radiation Therapy: Microneedling should be postponed for individuals who have undergone recent radiation therapy, as the skin in the treated area may be sensitive and prone to complications.
11. Accutane: - Wait at least 6 months after completing Accutane (isotretinoin) treatment before considering microneedling to minimize the risk of potential adverse reactions and ensure optimal skin healing.
Is there downtime?
The downtime for microneedling is typically minimal, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking skin rejuvenation without extended recovery periods. After the procedure, you may experience some mild side effects that generally resolve within a few days. The common side effects and downtime include:
Redness: Your skin may appear mildly red or flushed immediately after microneedling, similar to a mild sunburn. This redness usually subsides within a few hours to 1-2 days.
Swelling: Some individuals may experience mild swelling in the treated area, which usually lasts for 1-2 days.
Sensitivity: Your skin may feel slightly sensitive or tight after the procedure, but this sensation typically diminishes within a day or two.
Dryness and Peeling: As the skin heals, you may experience some dryness or peeling, similar to a light exfoliation. This is a natural part of the skin's rejuvenation process and may last for a few days.
Minor Bruising: In some cases, minor bruising or pinpoint-sized red dots (petechiae) may occur, particularly if deeper microneedling settings are used. These usually resolve within a few days.
Overall, most people can resume their regular activities immediately after microneedling, as the side effects are generally mild and temporary. The recovery time may vary slightly depending on the intensity of the treatment and individual skin responses.
What results should I expect?
The timing for visible results after microneedling can vary depending on individual skin concerns, the intensity of the treatment, and your skin's natural healing process. In general, you may start noticing initial improvements in your skin's appearance within a few days to a week after the procedure. However, the full benefits and optimal results typically become more evident over the following weeks and months.
Here is a general timeline of what you might expect:
Immediate Post-Procedure: Right after microneedling, you may experience some immediate skin improvements, such as a more radiant complexion and a slight plumping effect due to increased blood flow to the treated area.
This is often referred to the "MICRO GLOW"
First Week: During the first week after microneedling, any initial redness or swelling should subside, and your skin may start to feel smoother and more refined.
1 to 2 Weeks: In the weeks following the procedure, you may notice a gradual improvement in skin texture and tone. Your skin may appear brighter, and fine lines and wrinkles may begin to soften.
2 to 4 Weeks: As collagen production increases, your skin's firmness and elasticity may start to improve. You might see a reduction in the appearance of shallow acne scars and stretch marks.
4 to 6 Weeks: By this point, you may observe more noticeable changes in your skin's overall appearance. Hyperpigmentation, such as sunspots or age spots, could start to fade, and skin texture may continue to refine.
6 to 8 Weeks and Beyond: The most significant improvements in skin texture, firmness, and overall appearance are often observed between 6 to 8 weeks after microneedling.
Continued collagen remodeling can further enhance results beyond this timeframe.
It's essential to keep in mind that individual responses to microneedling can vary, and multiple sessions may be recommended for optimal and long-lasting results.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of microneedling sessions you will need depends on your individual skin concerns, the severity of the condition being treated, and your desired results. In most cases, a series of multiple sessions is recommended to achieve optimal and long-lasting outcomes.
For general skin rejuvenation and improvement of mild skin concerns, such as fine lines, texture, and overall skin tone, you may start to see results after just one or two sessions. However, to achieve more significant and noticeable improvements, most individuals benefit from a series of 4 to 6 sessions, spaced approximately 4 to 6 weeks apart.
For specific skin concerns, such as acne scars or deep wrinkles, more sessions may be needed to achieve the desired results. In such cases, your skincare professional or dermatologist will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan based on your skin's condition and your goals.
After completing the initial series of microneedling sessions, many people choose to have maintenance treatments every 3 to 6 months to sustain the results and promote ongoing collagen production.
It's essential to have realistic expectations and be patient with the process, as microneedling stimulates the body's natural healing response, and the full results may take several weeks to months to become fully evident.

BOOK YOUR MICRONEEDLINGWhat are the pre treatment instructions?
1) Avoid direct sunlight 24-48 hours before treatment: Sun exposure can make your skin more sensitive and increase the risk of adverse reactions during microneedling. Protecting your skin from direct sunlight helps reduce the chances of redness, irritation, and potential complications.
2) Drink plenty of water 24 hours before treatment: Hydrated skin is more resilient and better equipped to undergo microneedling. Drinking ample water helps maintain skin moisture and promotes optimal skin health, enhancing the treatment's effectiveness.
3) Do not use Retinol, glycolic acids, AHA (alpha hydroxy acids), vitamin A creams, or topical medications for 5 days prior to your microneedling appointment, you may continue the use of these products 1 week post-treatment: These products can sensitize the skin and may cause irritation or increased sensitivity during microneedling. Discontinuing their use before the procedure ensures a smoother and safer treatment experience.
4) If you can, please come to your appointment without makeup: Having a clean, makeup-free face allows the skincare professional to properly assess your skin's condition and perform microneedling more effectively. It also minimizes the risk of makeup residue clogging pores after the treatment.
5) Should be at least 2 weeks from last Botox injections, if applicable: Waiting for at least two weeks after receiving Botox injections ensures that the product settles properly, and the treated areas have stabilized. Microneedling too soon after Botox may interfere with its results or cause uneven distribution.
6) Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil/Motrin the day of your procedure (this inhibits the healing process): Anti-inflammatory medications can interfere with the natural healing response triggered by microneedling. Avoiding these medications on the day of the treatment helps maximize the benefits of collagen stimulation and skin rejuvenation.
7) Have not used Accutane in the last 6 months: Accutane (isotretinoin) can make the skin more sensitive and delay the healing process. To avoid potential complications, it is recommended to wait at least six months after completing Accutane treatment before undergoing microneedling.
Adhering to these pre-treatment instructions will help ensure that your skin is adequately prepared for microneedling, minimize the risk of adverse reactions, and optimize the results of the procedure.
If you have any specific questions or concerns about the pre-treatment guidelines, don't hesitate to contact us before your microneedling appointment.
What are the post treatment care?
Immediately after microneedling, your skin may exhibit some common reactions, such as redness, dryness, and mild swelling, which are entirely normal and expected responses to the treatment.
To optimize the healing process and ensure the best results, follow these post-treatment guidelines:
1. Avoid excessive sweating: Sweating can irritate the treated skin and potentially introduce bacteria, so it's best to avoid strenuous exercise and activities that cause excessive sweating for at least 24-48 hours after microneedling.
2. No pools, saunas, hot tubs: Refrain from swimming in pools, using saunas, or soaking in hot tubs for the first few days following the treatment. These environments can increase the risk of infection and interfere with the skin's healing process.
3. Avoid direct sunlight for the first 10 days: Hats are great :) Sunscreen is a must every day. Protect your treated skin from direct sunlight for the first 10 days after microneedling. Sun exposure can exacerbate redness and sensitivity and may cause pigmentation issues. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 whenever you're outdoors.
4. For best results, it’s important not to take any anti-inflammatories such as Advil, Aleve, or any other ibuprofen as we want the skin to naturally recover on its own: Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications like Advil or ibuprofen after microneedling, as they can interfere with the skin's natural healing process and the production of collagen. Allow your skin to heal naturally for optimal results.
5. Avoid all BHA, AHA, and Retinol (Vitamin A): Steer clear of skincare products containing BHA (beta hydroxy acids), AHA (alpha hydroxy acids), and Retinol (Vitamin A) for at least 7 days post-treatment. These active ingredients can irritate the skin and may hinder the healing process.
6. If you are prone to cold sores, stop into the clinic for Lysine Supplementation: Lysine is an essential amino acid that has been shown to help prevent the replication of the herpes simplex virus responsible for cold sores. This can help prevent a cold sore outbreak sometimes triggered by the microneedling procedure.
7. You may have dry patches that will heal in the next seven days, be sure to moisturize those areas often: After microneedling, your skin may experience some dryness and flakiness. Regularly moisturize the treated areas to keep your skin hydrated and support its healing process. Avoid picking or peeling any dry patches to prevent potential scarring and encourage smooth skin regeneration.
Following these guidelines will assist your skin in healing effectively after microneedling, minimize any discomfort, and promote the best possible results.
It's crucial to be patient during the post-treatment period as your skin undergoes the rejuvenation process, and remember that individual healing times may vary.
How do I care for my skin after microneedling?
The evening of: there is no need to do anything to your skin. If you feel any dryness or tightness, apply the hyaluronic in your take home skincare kit.
Cleanse: First thing the next morning it’s time to gently cleanse your face with the Quannessence Cleanser and lukewarm water, be sure to pat dry your face not rub as it may still feel sensitive.
Moisturize: Many will experience some dryness all over or in certain areas. It’s important to keep your skin hydrated, using the hyaluronic acid in your at home kit.
Starting on day 3-4 you may want to incorporate a hydrating serum such Bakuchiol, our natural alternative to retinol.
Protect your skin: Sun protection is vital after any professional skin care service. Be sure to apply a SPF of at least 30 every single day. After the redness has subsided your skin will glow, tone and texture will improve and the overall look of the skin will be brighter and healthier.
After the first 48 hours it’s time to Heal / Recovery: This is where the fun begins. It’s the actual healing process when the magic happens and our skin starts to increase collagen and elastin production. You will experience redness and heat due to inflammation in the treated areas. This should subside in 24hrs and if uncomfortable a cold damp face cloth will help. And of course drink plenty of water!
On Day Two you can start your normal Skincare Routine, be careful when reintroducing your tonner and any other active ingredients into your skincare.
Day 7 - 10 this would be the time to gently exfoliate, no coffee scrubs though. (This is the small sample I gave you, it’s green :)
What areas can I treat with microneedling?
Microneedling is a versatile treatment that can benefit various areas of the body beyond just the face. Some of the areas that can benefit from microneedling include:
-
Face: Microneedling is commonly used on the face to address issues like wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, and uneven skin texture.
-
Neck: Microneedling can help improve the appearance of necklines and sagging skin on the neck.
-
Décolletage: Microneedling can address skin concerns on the chest area, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and sun damage.
-
Hands: Microneedling can be used on the back of the hands to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of age spots.
-
Scars: Microneedling can be effective in reducing the appearance of various types of scars, including surgical scars, acne scars, and stretch marks.
-
Stretch Marks: Microneedling can help stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of stretch marks on the body.
Facial Acupuncture an amazing compliment!
Facial acupuncture is a valuable complement to microneedling due to its unique benefits and effects on the skin. Both treatments aim to improve the skin's appearance and promote overall skin health, but they achieve this through different mechanisms.
-
Skin Stimulation: Microneedling involves the use of tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. This process helps improve skin texture, reduce scars, and promote skin rejuvenation. On the other hand, facial acupuncture uses thin needles strategically placed on specific acupuncture points on the face to increase blood circulation, encourage collagen production, and promote skin regeneration.
-
Holistic Approach: While microneedling focuses primarily on enhancing the skin's structure, facial acupuncture takes a more holistic approach to overall well-being. It not only addresses skin concerns but also targets other imbalances in the body, including stress reduction, hormonal balance, and improved digestion, which can contribute to healthier and more radiant skin.
-
Reducing Inflammation: Both microneedling and acupuncture have anti-inflammatory effects on the skin. Microneedling stimulates the body's natural healing response, which can reduce inflammation and redness caused by various skin conditions. Acupuncture also helps reduce inflammation and can be especially beneficial for conditions like acne and rosacea.
-
Enhanced Results: When used in combination, microneedling and facial acupuncture can enhance each other's results. Microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin, allowing better absorption of the serums and nutrients used during acupuncture. The increased blood flow and collagen production from acupuncture can further improve the skin's healing process after microneedling.
-
Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Facial acupuncture sessions are known for their relaxing and calming effects. Stress can contribute to skin issues, such as acne and dull complexion. By reducing stress and promoting relaxation, facial acupuncture can indirectly benefit the skin's overall health and appearance.
-
Long-Term Benefits: Both microneedling and facial acupuncture offer cumulative benefits over time. Regular sessions of facial acupuncture can help maintain and prolong the results achieved through microneedling.
Overall, the combination of microneedling and facial acupuncture provides a comprehensive and synergistic approach to skin rejuvenation, addressing not only the skin's surface but also internal factors that can influence skin health. This complementary treatment duo can lead to more effective and long-lasting results, helping you achieve a radiant and youthful complexion.
Best of all it's covered by most private health care providers.
