Tips for Improving Sperm Health from our Naturopathic Doctors

When it comes to fertility, ovarian health and eggs are only have of the equation! We see male-factor infertility challenges clinically more frequently than most realize and while it's less talked about than female, it is a critical piece of the puzzle. Often even if sperm count is within acceptable medical standards, it may not be optimal for conception, and sperm count is an integral part of that process.

Since this topic is less discussed, we want to encourage men to feel comfortable discussing this with both their partner and healthcare providers! Empowering men to take control of their health especially early on in the screening process makes a huge difference.

We often recommend a minimum 60-90 day protocol to be followed to optimize sperm count for best outcomes. Nutrition is one foundational aspect of health that we have more control over than others, and as naturopathic doctors we take a look into diet as one of the first treatment options in cases of male-factor infertility.

There is a lot that can be achieved through nutrition - here are three nutrition tips from our naturopathic doctors to help improve sperm health:

  1. Eat 2 brazil nuts per day. Brazil nuts are full of selenium. In studies, 200mcg (micrograms) of selenium per day has been shown to improve sperm motility and pregnancy outcomes. You can get that dose from 2 brazil nuts (it's important not to overdo it on them, so stick to two!)
  2. Snack on walnuts every day. The polyunsaturated fats in walnuts have consistently been shown in research to improve sperm vitality, motility, and quality.
  3. Eliminate processed red meats. Processed meats are things like sandwich meats, fast food, hot dogs, and bacon. Many of these processed meats have inflammatory properties that have been shown to have directly negative impacts on sperm health.
  4. Swap processed meats for fish, if possible. Studies show that folks with sperm who eat more fish have higher sperm counts and better quality sperm.

While nutrition is one important factor, but we also look at exercise, sleep, stress management, lifestyle recommendations and supplementation when necessary! Our naturopathic doctors identify obstacles to conception that are relevant to you, and help support you through your fertility journey.

** It’s important to consider the risks of interactions with other medications, and potential side effects of supplementation. This is best done with one of our Naturopathic Doctor. Always consult your health care professional before beginning a new supplement or lifestyle routine.
